About this event

Structural engineers from Arup and an engineer from Laing O’Rourke will discuss the engineering behind this landmark project.

The Edinburgh St James Development is one of the biggest projects currently underway in the UK. When it opens in 2020, it will serve Edinburgh with up to 850,000 sq. ft of prime galleria retail space, five-star luxury accommodation, cinema space, and up to 250 new residential apartments.

The structural engineers from Arup will discuss the design of this landmark project. Initially, this will cover the advanced works for the demolition of the old St James Centre and to ensure that John Lewis can remain open for the duration of the construction. The new development comprises a large-scale and complex superstructure to tie into the existing structures and achieve the ambitious aesthetic aspirations of the architect. All of which is supported by a three-story basement with enough parking spaces for 1,600 vehicles.

This event is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the practical design of such a mammoth and unique project, and to gain an insight into what Edinburgh's centre will look like in 2020.

Registration from 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start.

  • Oliver Woodruff, Senior Structural Engineer, Arup (Edinburgh)
  • Allan Macdonald, Senior Structural Engineer, Arup (Glasgow)
  • An engineer from Laing O’Rourke
