About this event

You will have the chance to hear about 2 projects currently being investigated by TRL:

Implications of HGV platooning on road performance

Vehicle automation is increasingly becoming more prevalent and has the potential to improve safety for road users and reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions on heavily trafficked roads. However there is limited knowledge about the effects on the road infrastructure. This study assesses the potential impacts of HGV platooning on pavement performance in the UK and it identifies possible knowledge gaps that have not been addressed in previous trials.

SENSKIN

Real-time remote monitoring of structural assets is fast becoming a major tool for the asset manager. The SENSKIN is a new skin-like sensor being developed by a consortium of European partners that can measure deformations over a defined area (and not simply at discrete points).

It is also designed to be robust in harsh environmental conditions and to withstand extreme (>10%) strains. Not only will this sensor provide real-time assurance in benign conditions but also critical information in times of crisis to assist in disaster recovery decision making. TRL are testing and advising on the development of the new sensor, using its structures laboratory and hi-tech video measurement equipment.

Attendance is free of charge but there are places for just 25 people for the visit and pre-booking is essential, please.

The Group will take lunch after the visit at a nearby public house – The Golden Retriever (a Vintage Inn) where the food is of good quality and the menu varied. Once you have booked your place(s) online, please email anne.qualters@ice.org.uk to advise whether you wish to be included in the lunch numbers (payable on the day).
