The ICE Specification for Piling and Embedded Retaining Walls (SPERWall) is the UK's pre-eminent technical specification for piling and embedded walling works. This 3rd edition has been updated to reflect the latest piling techniques and procurement methods used in the geotechnical sector, as well as revisions to the Eurocodes, British Standards and CIRIA guides.
In the first part of this evening meeting, Tony and Pete will describe the main changes made to the document since the 2nd edition, and the factors that drove these changes. The existence of an agreed way of executing piling works helps to reduce disputes on site and enables consultants to design more economically by having confidence in how the site works will be carried out. In the second part of the meeting, some common consultant and contractor pitfalls in writing and executing a piling specification from each other's perspective will be discussed.
This event is being broadcast online. Please join the lecture up to 10 minutes before the start time of 18.30.

Pete is a Chartered Engineer, and an Associate at Arup, where he has spent the last 16 years responsible for the design of a huge variety of complex underground structures. He was a steering group member and principal author for the previous two editions of the ICE Piling Specification, and regularly uses it 'in anger'. Pete's drive to improve geotechnical design guidance and specification includes ongoing work, in collaboration with academia, to refine design methodology for retaining walls, and active participation in a Eurocode 7 Technical Committee Working Group for the 2020 revision.
Tony is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is an owner of A-squared Studio Engineers Ltd, a geotechnical consultancy with specific emphasis on design implementation and buildability. Tony has worked in the piling industry for almost 30 years tackling the delivery of complex substructure schemes in congested urban settings. He was involved with the last two ICE Piling Specification revisions. He spearheads numerous initiatives across academia, consultancy and construction sectors, and is recognised as a leading figure in the industry in the field of pile design.
