Overview

Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composite bridges have numerous benefits, such as lightweight construction, durability and resistance to corrosion.

They are an increasingly popular choice in the UK for re-decking and widening schemes particularly for footbridges and active travel routes.

As part of the session, Steven Dunn from Lifespan Structures will explain how FRP bridges compare to those built with more traditional materials.

He will also cover some topics relevant to civil engineers including:

  • The manufacturing process
  • Design guidance and standards
  • Parapet and foundations for FRP bridges
  • Access and lifting
  • Sustainability

The session will feature the case study of Keynsham Bridge in Bath which was shortlisted for the ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards 2024.

The event has been organised by the ICE Bath City Club.
