About this event

Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) is the UK's national laboratory for fusion research. It is owned and operated by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). Today the UK fusion programme is centred on the innovative MAST (Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak) experiment . The programme is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the European Union under the EURATOM treaty. CCFE also hosts the world's largest magnetic fusion experiment, JET (Joint European Torus), on behalf of its European partners.

The visit is a part booking of a public Open Day of 100 afternoon visitors. You are required to arrive on site for 13:30. Everyone attending will need to stop at the main gate reception to collect a pass allowing them to access site. To collect a pass visitors are asked to bring a form of photo ID with them, either a current passport or photo driving licence.

The afternoon starts at 2.00pm with a 30-minute talk introducing the research taking place at UKAEA. We then divide into eight groups (two ICE groups) and tour both the JET (Joint European Torus) and MAST (Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak) facilities at Culham. The tours are given by members of staff, some are physicists some engineers and there will also be graduates from CCFE's graduates and apprentices scheme working through the day. All enjoy talking about the work and research they are involved with, so do come prepared with some questions.

After the visit you might wish to join others from the Retired Members' Group at 'The Barley Mow' nearby for tea/supper. Please email if you wish to be included in this so the organisers can give the landlord an idea of numbers.
