The Wey and Arun Canal Trust is an almost entirely voluntary organisation formed in 1973 by a few enthusiastic individuals. Its aim is to achieve the restoration of the canal as a public amenity, so forming a navigable link between the River Wey and River Arun. This will recreate the direct water link which once existed between London and Littlehampton on the South Coast.
The Trust has reached agreement with many landowners so that restoration work can take place on over half of the 23-mile total length. Already, 21 bridges have been rebuilt, two aqueducts reconstructed, 11 locks restored, culverts rebuilt and several miles of canal bed cleared and dredged.
The Trust has several ongoing restoration projects and some lengths of the canal are now in water. Trip boats with up to 50 seats regularly run cruises on the idyllic Loxwood section of the canal.
The newly formed ICE Retired Members Group is pleased to provide an opportunity for members and guests to learn something of the canal restoration work which has been achieved and of some of the engineering projects which are currently underway. The event will comprise a technical talk and a short cruise on the canal, with an optional lunch in a canal-side pub prior to the cruise.
The timetable for the event is as follows:
Unfortunately the organisers have only been able to book a boat that accommodates 27 people and we have received far more expressions of interest than we have places available. (If you have not already been in touch about this event, please do not proceed any further now!) As a result we can only offer the visit on a first come, first served basis. Please use the Book Now button and follow the instructions on the screen. Each ticket will cost £11 and must be paid for by credit/debit card on the system.
If you wish to take lunch at the Onslow Arms and have not yet advised this when expressing interest in the visit, please do so as soon as your booking is confirmed. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Also, if you would like to be added to the Retired Members' Group contact list so you can hear about future events and activities, please advise Anne Qualters.
To book your place, simply click the 'book now' button below and follow the onscreen instructions.
If you're not already an ICE member, you can register to receive updates on our latest events.
