This case study describes how innovative GPS technology methods have been employed to provide a solution for fast surveying options on the track.
With time, accuracy and safety, big factors for surveying of rail assets, collaboration and imagination have brought together a perfect solution for fast surveying options on the track.
Global positioning and laser scanning equipment providers, Topcon, alongside Aquarius Railroad Technologies Ltd, a provider of 4-wheel-drive road rail vehicles for track maintenance, have developed an innovative solution to surveying the railtrack. CATSURVEYS were able to incorporate the use of Topcon's IP-S2 Mobile Mapping Compact+ Unit and Aquarius' 'Rail Truck' to create a unique mobile mapping solution for use on the railways.
"Laser scanning has an endless array of uses throughout the world and it's great that we as a company can be a part of something new and innovative that will benefit every member of the railway community. Whether you are a railway service provider or if you simply use trains to commute. This new fuse of technologies will bring about faster maintenance, faster railway management, safer tracks and most importantly cheaper costs." states Luke Steadman, Survey Manager CATSURVEYS. Aquarius' Land Rover RRV is capable of transporting equipment from depot to track side then on rail, making it a perfect partner for Topcon's IP-S2 Mobile Mapping unit in conjunction with the expertise of CATSURVEYS.
The product was designed to save clients time and money, producing efficient survey results by scanning the whole track and surrounding area in a minimum amount of time.
On and off tracking is easy and quick, with the rail guidance system being activated from within the cab. The double cab allows room for the computer equipment, driver and engineers. The scanning equipment is fitted to the rear of the pickup body and creates the height required for data capturing. With the ability to travel at speed of 20mph on track, and 15mph in reverse the data can be collected quickly, easily and safely.
