I saw becoming Chartered with ICE as the benchmark of my professional achievements. Having been a civil engineer since 2006, I already had the right level of experience - so I wanted to translate it into the highest form of professional recognition.
I found that ICE gives you plenty of support. I attended the Career Appraisal workshop which was absolutely invaluable in steering me towards what the reviewers were looking for.
I had discussions with ICE's Membership Development Officers (MDOs) which were important as the comments were based on my case. Another great help was the ICE publication 'Successful Professional Reviews for Civil Engineers'. It helped me to develop the right mindset and improve my confidence for the interview.
The first day I saw the letters CEng MICE after my name was very special. Professional qualification commands far higher regard. My peers and senior colleagues value my opinion, and clients place more weight on my advice.
I've taken on more project opportunities, including management and delivery. I achieved promotion and financial rewards - then further progressed my career since.
I am currently a Principal Engineer working for AECOM, delivering structural designs on railway projects. I act as civils discipline lead in a multi-disciplinary framework - liaising with clients and contractors, planning programmes and managing quality controls.
I feel that I have influence and credibility that I couldn't have achieved without becoming professionally qualified with ICE.
"When I had my business cards reprinted with the title IEng MICE after my name - it filled me with a great sense of pride."

In the engineering industry, ICE carries significantly more weight than any other professional body. I wanted the best, and that meant demonstrating my qualifications, experience and attributes. Instead of letting life hold me back, I decided to knuckle down and do it - because I really wanted it.
ICE offers a lot in terms of support and with ongoing guidance from ICE mentors I developed a clear action plan to work towards my goal.
Looking at my experience for my career appraisal gave me an even greater appreciation of my progression and achievements - boosting my confidence.
Overall, gaining my professional qualification has given me far greater credibility and authority. In fact, I was fast-tracked to management promotion, so my career has come on leaps and bounds.
Now I mentor others on their journey towards professional qualification. I tell them that with discipline and determination - you'll achieve those letters after your name. And it will give you a level of influence and recognition that's unattainable without the industry-leading professional qualification.
