What's inspired me to become an engineer? Lots of things, but The Bank of China Tower really stands out. I love the fact that it dominates the Hong Kong skyline. Its unique and dramatic shape also shows that it couldn't have been built without great engineering expertise.

I’m now in my third year studying Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Sheffield, and I'm enjoying it more than ever. My course includes modules on design, maths, materials and sustainability. It’s challenging and I have to work hard, but in a couple of years I’ll graduate from a world class university – and will hopefully get a good job.

As an ICE QUEST scholar, I’ve gained really useful work experience through summer placements with Balfour Beatty. In 2013 I worked on part of the £380m contract to renew all the railway track in southeast England. Last year I was also involved in the Crossrail project to install two new lines and to construct a new station.

ICE’s student membership has helped me to build up a network of engineering contacts, and I've learnt about new engineering techniques from specialist journals.

I'm excited about the wide range of paths you can take as an engineer – such as geotechnical, structural or hydraulic engineering – and the fact that civil engineers are needed all over the world.

I hope that getting a degree, being an ICE member and working towards becoming chartered, will allow me to work on some state-of-the-art projects overseas.
