Reinstating your membership

This page explains how you can get your ICE membership reinstated. Find out what you need to do, depending on your previous grade of membership, and how long it’s been since your membership ended.

If your membership ended less than 10 months ago, you can reinstate it online via 'My subscriptions'.

Student reinstatement

If you are still studying, we can extend your free student membership. Simply email students@ice.org.uk and provide the following details:

  • Name of the university/college course
  • Expected graduation date

If you have already completed your studies, you can apply for Graduate membership.

Graduate reinstatement

To reinstate your GMICE membership you need to:

  1. Check that we have correct details about your qualifications
  2. Pay the relevant fees

If your GMICE membership ended over 10 months ago, there is £51.50 reinstatement fee to pay, as well as the following year’s subscription (payable on a pro-rata basis), which you can do by contacting Membership Services on +44 (0)20 7665 2227

If you are entitled to a concession, please fill in the reduced subscription fee application form and send it to subs@ice.org.uk or Membership Services Department, ICE, One Great George Street, London SW1P 3AA.

Member reinstatement

If you were a professionally qualified member or technician (MICE or EngTech/IEng/CEng or CEnv MICE), what you need to do to re-join depends on how long it has been since your membership ended.

If you have not paid your fees for the current year, the date your membership is deemed to have ended is the date the new subscription year begins - 1 January.

Up to 10 months

If your membership ended less than 10 months ago, you can reinstate it online via 'My subscriptions'.

Between 10 months and three years

If you have been off the ICE membership roll between 10 months and three years, you will need to show us what you have been doing.

You can do this by sending the following documents to professional.reviews@ice.org.uk

We will assess your submission. If there is not enough information to make a decision, we may ask you to provide more information or to attend an interview. The interview helps ICE to assess you against the attributes required for your membership grade.

If your application is approved you will be re-admitted on payment of the necessary fees .

More than three years

If your membership ended more than three years ago, you will need to demonstrate that through your experience and continuing professional development you have maintained your competence for the membership grade you are reinstating. You will need to send the following documents to professional.reviews@ice.org.uk:

We will assess your submission. If the assessors are not able to determine the level of competence from the information provided, we may ask you to provide more information or to attend an interview. The interview will be against the attributes or standards for the membership grade you are reinstating to. There is a fee payable for the reinstatement interview – see below .

Engineering Council / Chartered Environmentalist registration only

If you want to reinstate your registration with the Engineering Council or the Society for the Environment, you need to follow the same process as outlined above depending on when your registration ended.

Retired members

If you are retired and you want to re-join, you will need to follow the process outlined above, depending on when your membership ended. But you do not need to send us any CPD records. However, we will ask you to sign a declaration under our Code of Professional Conduct.

Applying for a higher grade

If you want to apply for a higher grade, we recommend you reinstate your previous membership first. If you are successful in applying for a higher grade, you will still have to pay a reinstatement fee together with the appropriate:

  • ICE subscription fee
  • Engineering Council registration fee (if applicable)

Membership of another professional body

If you have gained membership with another professional body with which ICE has a recognition agreement* you can use this route to membership as an alternative to undertaking the reinstatement process. ICE has 4 recognition routes:

*Membership obtained using a recognition route does not allow you to use the ICE Chartered Civil Engineer title.

Fees

You will need to pay a reinstatement fee, plus the current year's subscription fee and any Engineering Council subscription charges (if applicable), before you can re-join.

  • Reinstatement fee
    • EngTech MICE – £51.50
    • All other grades – £104.75
  • Professional Review interview fee if required
    • EngTech MICE – £66.00
    • MICE, IEng MICE – £108.75
    • CEng MICE – £142.50

Fellow reinstatement

If you were a Fellow (FICE) or professionally qualified Fellow (EngTech/IEng/CEng FICE/CEnv FICE) what you need to do to re-join will depend on how long it has been since your membership ended.

If you have not paid your fees for the current year, the date your membership is deemed to have ended is the date the new subscription year begins - 1 January.

More than three years

If your membership ended more than three years ago, you will need to demonstrate that through your experience and continuing professional development you have maintained your competence for the membership grade you are reinstating. You will need to send the following documents to fellowship@ice.org.uk:

  • A re-admission to membership application form
  • A CV, including the period you have not been a member
  • Continuing professional development (CPD) records for the last three years and your Development Action Plan (DAP) for the next 12 months – our CPD guidance has more information
  • A statement of no more than 500 words explaining why your membership ceased
  • A 1,000 word report which demonstrates, with reference to the relevant attributes, how through your experience and continuing professional development you have maintained your competence
  • Completed questionnaire forms filled out by two sponsors
  • Certified copies of your academic qualifications
