Reinstatement

Reinstating your membership

If your ICE membership has ended, don't worry, there are ways for you to re-join.

What you need to do depends on:

  • What grade of membership you had
  • How long ago it ended

Student membership

Depending on what you've done since your membership ended, you may still be able to re-join as a student member. Otherwise, you might have to apply for graduate membership.

If you think you still qualify for free student membership, please contact the Education and Learning team on +44 (0)20 7665 2147 or email: students@ice.org.uk

You'll need to apply for graduate membership if:

  • You were a student member and didn't transfer to graduate membership (by 1 December in the year you graduated)

or

  • You've now completed a first degree course

Apply for graduate membership online

Graduate/affiliate membership

If we don't have a certified copy of your qualification, we'll ask you to send it to us before we can reinstate your graduate membership.

Academic Assessment

If you became a graduate member after having an Academic Assessment, and your membership has now ended, you may need a new assessment.

To find out if you do, please contact the ICE Education and Learning team on +44 (0)20 7665 2147 or email aqp@ice.org.uk

Reinstating your graduate/affiliate membership

If you were a graduate or affiliate member and you:

  • Resigned on or before 31 December in the last year of your membership, you need to pay the current graduate/affiliate subscription fee
  • Didn't renew your subscription before 1 May, you need to pay the current subscription rate

If you're entitled to a concession, please fill in the reduced subscription fee application form and send it to subs@ice.org.uk or Membership Services Department, ICE, One Great George Street, London SW1P 3AA.

Reinstating your professionally qualified membership

If you were a professionally qualified member (FICE, MICE, AMICE, TMICE), what you need to do depends on how long it's been since your membership ended.

Between six months and three years

If you've been off the ICE membership roll between six months and three years, you’ll need to show us what work you’ve been doing since. You can do this by sending these documents to profrev@ice.org.uk:

  • A re-admission to membership application form
  • A CV, covering the period when you haven’t been a member
  • Continuing professional development (CPD) records for the last three years and your targets (development action plan) for the next 12 months – our CPD guidance has more information
  • A statement of no more than 500 words explaining why your membership lapsed

We’ll then assess the documents to decide if you can re-join. If we don't have enough information to make a decision, you might need to come to an interview. The interview helps us to assess you against the attributes required for your membership grade.

More than three years

If your membership ended more than three years ago, we’ll need some details about the work you’ve done since your membership ended. You'll need to send the following documents to profrev@ice.org.uk:

  • A re-admission to membership application form
  • An application fee
  • A CV, covering the period since your membership lapsed
  • Continuing professional development (CPD) records for the last three years and your targets (development action plan) for the next 12 months – our CPD guidance has more information
  • A statement of no more than 500 words explaining why your membership ended
  • A 2,000-word experience report – covering the period since your membership ended. It needs to describe your contribution to projects, the responsibility you were given, and any training you’ve had
  • Completed questionnaire forms filled out by three sponsors (two for TMICE)

We’ll assess the information to check your knowledge and experience are up to date. If they are, you’ll need to do a Professional Review against the attributes for the membership you're reinstating to.

Engineering Council/chartered environmentalist registration only

If you’re a member of ICE but your Engineering Council or chartered environmentalist (CEnv) registration has ended, you’ll need to email these documents to profrev@ice.org.uk:

  • A re-admission to membership application form
  • A CV covering the period since your Engineering Council/CEnv registration ended
  • Continuing professional development (CPD) records for the last three years and your targets (development action plan) for the next 12 months – our CPD guidance has more information
  • A statement of no more than 500 words explaining why your registration ended
  • A 2,000-word experience report (only needed if your registration lapsed more than three years ago) – covering the period since your membership ended. It needs to describe your contribution to projects you’ve worked on, the responsibility you were given and any training you’ve had

We’ll then review your documents to decide if you can register again. If we can’t make a decision based on this information, you might need to come to an interview. This interview will help us to assess whether your knowledge and skills are up to date.

You'll need an interview if your registration ended more than three years ago.

Retired members

If you’re retired and you want to re-join, you don’t need to send us any CPD records. However, we will ask you to sign a declaration under our Code of Professional Conduct.

For any questions or for more information, please contact the Admission and Transfers team on +44 (0) 20 7665 2344 or email professional.reviews@ice.org.uk
