Derwent engineer receives Royal welcome on anniversary day

During the summer one of the region’s well-renowned schemes celebrated its half century, and it is with great delight that one of the key engineers on the project was able to mark the occasion.

ICE Senior, Neil Buchanan CEng, was one of the people responsible for the creation of the Derwent Reservoir and visited the significant civil engineering project to relive the memories at a special presentation.

Neil, who turned 90 this year, was chosen to guide HRH Princess Alexandra around the £5.5m scheme at its official opening in 1967.

He received a letter from Princess Alexandra after her initial visit, before receiving one this July as she passed on her best wishes to Neil, since her previous visit 50 years earlier.

Fantastic news and many congratulations to Neil for his work and role in one of the region's biggest civil engineering triumphs!
