ICE has awarded its first Chartered Engineer (CEng) qualification in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Dr Ghanim Kashwani.
Dr Kashwani, 32, graduated from the American University of Sharjah (AUS), UAE, in 2010 with a BSc in civil engineering, followed by an MSc in civil engineering in 2012.
He received a PhD in civil engineering from Heriot-Watt University in Scotland in 2017.
Patrick Moody, HM Ambassador to the UAE, presented Dr Kashwani with his certificate at the Embassy in Abu Dhabi on 1 May 2019.
Highlighting opportunities in the region
After receiving his CEng certificate, Dr Kashwani said that he hoped to use his influence in the country to promote ICE in the region, and to encourage other engineers to join the institution.
The Gulf region is one of the world’s foremost hubs of construction and infrastructure development.
There are huge opportunities for civil engineers and for the ICE across this region, with a large number of major infrastructure projects taking place in the next five years.
Dr Kashwani currently works at New York University in Abu Dhabi as a post-doctoral associate in civil engineering. His research interests include construction materials, safety engineering, and fire engineering.
Prior to this, he worked for eight years at the ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) Group as HSE team leader.
