Sandhya Sreekumar, a civil engineer from Gloucester, who has spent years volunteering to promote science and engineering in schools, has won a regional STEM Ambassador award in recognition of her work and dedication.
Sandhya first became involved with STEM activities and events as a university undergraduate. Since then, she has volunteered with many different STEM outreach projects, giving her time to help inspire children and young people about civil engineering throughout the region.
As part of her volunteering work while at Tony Gee, Sandhya has supported local students to achieve their CREST Awards, represented the company at numerous careers fairs and helped to improve work experience packages for students. She’s also helped to inspire her work colleagues, contributing to a growing number of engineers getting involved with STEM activities.
Most recently, Sandhya has started a pioneering project with GFirst LEP – the Local Enterprise Partnership for Gloucestershire – to bring engineering workshops to schools for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). She’s also teamed up with ICE’s Gloucester City Club to link more schools throughout Gloucestershire with civil engineers.
ICE South West’s STEM Ambassador of the Year Award recognises an ICE member who has shown outstanding commitment to inspiring the next generation of civil engineers.
Katy Toms, ICE South West Regional Committee Chair, who led the judging panel for this year’s competition, said: “Sandhya is a truly dedicated STEM Ambassador, giving her support in every possible aspect of STEM engagement, from mentoring to running stalls at events. Her enthusiasm and professionalism shines through, making her an inspiring role model for children and young people. We’re grateful to Sandhya and all our STEM Ambassadors for the vital work they do to promote civil engineering to the next generation.”
Sandhya will be presented with her accolade at the ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards ceremony on Thursday, 22 October in Bristol. She’ll also go through to the national final of STEM Ambassador of the Year with ICE announcing the overall winner later this year.
