On 9 March, ICE led a roundtable focussing on equality, diversity and inclusivity within the construction sector. The discussion centred on how to address the low percentage of women and minorities within civil engineering and related professions.
The session was led by Suzy Firkin, Membership Director at WISE, a UK-based organisation dedicated to encouraging professional women in STEM. ICE's Diversity and Inclusivity Action Plan in fact draws on the WISE 10-step model, which emphasises sharing good practice, fostering education and understanding, and challenging the status quo.
The event was the first of a series which will encourage greater diversity in the construction sector. Held at Graham Construction, it attracted 18 attendees from across client, consulting and contracting backgrounds.
"Having a high calibre of involved individuals, rigorous evidence and backing from across the sector should set in motion the dynamic change required within business," said Emer Murnaghan of Graham Construction.
"The only obstacle now is mind-set – the rest of the debate has already been won!"
In the coming months ICE will continue to engage with the construction sector, helping to identify unconscious bias and developing careers material for schools which appeals to young women.
