An evocative black and white image of excavation work taking place for the Central Terminal Station in Luton, has taken the top spot in an ICE photography competition.

The image, taken by Paul Baralos, has been named the winner of the ICE East of England’s Picture This 2019 competition.

His image, taken with a Leica M9 + Voigtlander 12mm f/5.6, shows the work taking place on Luton DART (Direct Air Rail Transit).

ICE East of England’s regional director, Glen Owen, said: “Paul’s image of the excavation work in Luton Dart is both striking and a great way to highlight the excellent work that civil engineers do behind the scenes.

“This photograph will help the public understand more about what civil engineering involves.”

Luton DART is a planned automated, guided people mover from Luton Airport Parkway station to Luton Airport scheduled to open in 2021.

Picture This started in 2008 and every year seeks images that show what civil engineering is about.

The runner-up picture is of London Gateway Port in Essex, which was taken by previous Picture This winner Andrew Bowen, who receives £100.
