After visiting a number of projects including Crossrail and the Olympic Park, eight Chinese engineers and a leading academic from Shanghai Jiao Tong University travelled north to the Mersey Gateway bridge, currently under construction at Halton.

ICE North West’s Regional Director, Darrell Matthews, hosted the visit: ““This was a really important visit for us to be involved with. Chinese companies have delivered massive urban development in China over the past 20 years, now they’re looking to international markets for future growth. They’re keen to draw on western and British expertise when it comes to advanced construction methods, building information modelling, and how we manage risks and protect the environment during construction projects.”

As well as hosting activity such as this, ICE is also active in furthering relations between the two countries. China has a huge infrastructure programme and demand for engineering expertise, which British engineers are keen to support. So ICE has been working to facilitate engagement between the UK and Chinese construction industries, and pave the way for collaboration.
