The People’s Choice Award winner for 2017 is Jubilee Pool, Penzance – one of the 12 projects put forward from across the UK and voted for by the general public.

Jubilee Pool is one of the last saltwater tidal swimming pools remaining in Europe and the UK’s largest surviving outdoor lido. A major renovation programme with strong support from the local community resulted in a transformed pool and an extremely popular public leisure facility brought back to life. Over 100,000 visitors have since been to the pool.

This followed years of neglect and a powerful storm that in 2014 almost brought an end to the pool and its buildings. Renovation started in summer 2015 and in July 2016 was officially reopened by Prince Charles.

Martin Nixon, Friends of Jubilee Pool, said of the project’s win: “We're thrilled the pool has been recognised in this way.”

“It's a very popular community-owned asset, making a significant contribution to Penzance's economy by attracting visitors to our beautiful town.”

Coastal Communities Minister, Jake Berry, said:

“The Coastal Communities Fund continues to support transformative projects which deliver major economic benefits and breathe new life into seaside towns across the country. I’m delighted that our funding helped deliver such an awe-inspiring renovation of the UK’s largest surviving outdoor lido and, that the Jubilee Pool in Penzance has received the recognition it deserves in the prestigious People’s Choice Award 2017.”

The People’s Choice Awards saw a total of over 15.5k votes cast for the 12 nominated projects.

The Kindle and six months of books/audio books was won by voter Julianne Rouquette.

People’s Choice Awards 2018 to go international

Next year’s People’s Choice Awards 2018 will include projects nominated from around the world for the first time as part of the ICE 200 bicentennial celebrations and events.

ICE 200 is to target the non-engineering general public to raise awareness of what civil engineering is and what civil engineers do. Key messages focus on how civil engineers transform lives and safeguard the future and to inspire future generations.

The People’s Choice Award was also devised to engage directly with the public and is an excellent opportunity to showcase projects from across the globe and what civil engineers are achieving. It’s a two-way process where they vote for a civil engineering project that they know, value and want to support.
