The Emerging Engineers Award offers all ICE student, graduate, apprentice and trainee technician members the opportunity to submit a paper on any civil engineering related topic in the format of research, a report or an essay.
Entering the Emerging Engineers Award (EEA) allows applicants to:
- Showcase talent in the wider engineering community
- Develop skills and confidence in public speaking
- Improve written and verbal skills in preparation for Professional Review
- Promote their employer or university’s name
Entries should be based on an applicant’s own work and can be adapted from university projects, quarterly employment reports or Professional Review reports.
Prizes for the West Midlands Regional Final:
- First Prize £250
- Second Prize £100
- Third Prize £50
Entries consist of an initial single A4 page synopsis (approximately 400 words) which, if shortlisted, should be developed further into a final submission of no more than 4,000 words.
The three finalists will receive free tickets to the ICE West Midlands Annual Awards Dinner on Friday, 15 May 2020 where the regional winner will be announced. The regional winner will be shortlisted for the Emerging Engineers Award Final where the prestigious Institution Medal and further cash prizes can be won.
Deadline for submission of a 400-word synopsis: 17 February 2020
Shortlisting notification: 09 March 2020
Deadline for submission of full papers: 20 April 2020
Competition: 05 May 2020

Final copies of your paper (if selected) will need to be submitted by Monday, 20 April 2020. The Regional Final for those who are successfully shortlisted will be held on Tuesday, 05 May 2020.
