A former landfill site and a new bridge have been awarded for their excellence in civil engineering at the 66th annual ICE Yorkshire and Humber Awards.

The annual ceremony took place online for the first time on Friday, 5 March, and saw 16 shortlisted projects battle it out to win the Sir John Fowler Award, Smeaton Award and Centenary Award.

The three awards were presented to the following projects:

Centenary Award Winner

Murdoch’s Connection delivered Highways England, Arup and Interserve, was the Centenary Award winner at the ceremony. The category was eligible to projects with a total cost in excess of £5 million.

This project reconnects the city centre of Hull with its rejuvenated waterfront across the busy A63. It is a new landmark bridge in the city that forms a gateway to the historic centre of Hull.

Smeaton Award winner

Sugden End Landfill Remediation Works, delivered by Bradford Council, Wardell Armstrong, Eric Wright Civil Engineering was the Smeaton Award winner for projects valued under £5million.

Work on the 10-hectare site involved stripping temporary restoration subsoil materials then capping with geo-synthetic clay liner. The new landscape was contoured to the previous ground level removing depressions caused by settlement. New drainage ensured leachate did not pollute watercourses. Planting of seed moorland mix and trees with restoration of stone-walls and fencing was undertaken creating public open access woodland and moorland.

Sir John Fowler Award winner

Optimisation of cold formed steel systems for large scale manufacturing of modular houses, delivered by University of Leeds and Ilke Homes, was the Sir John Fowler Award winner. The category was eligible to projects which had undertaken research or a feasibility study in the region.

The Ilke modular systems based on cold-formed steel enable rapid house manufacturing, but their cost limited their widespread use in the northern region. The project between the University of Leeds and Yorkshire-based Ilke Homes, transformed the Ilke structural design from steel bracing to sheathing braced systems. By doing full-scale experiments and high-delity numerical analysis, savings of 10% of steel and 4% of production time were achieved in new systems, leading to carbon savings, enhanced productivity and reduced cost. The new Ilke house design is cost competitive in Yorkshire.
