Research and innovation are critical to the future of civil engineering, yet the process by which engineering creativity is converted to commercial success is rarely publicised.
ICE has therefore commissioned and published a special issue of its Civil Engineering journal entitled ‘From research to practice’.
Issue editor Phil Renforth of Cardiff University says, ‘most of the innovation within our profession passes from the brains of engineers to the bottom line of balance sheets with little celebration or publicity. But it is this precious movement from mind to matter that matters to be minded, so I am delighted we are promoting it in Civil Engineering.’
Topics covered in the issue range from Anglo-American research into plastic geogrids which is now being used in UK road pavements, to commercial realisation in China of UK research into extruded fibre-reinforced concrete slabs.
Other papers include Canadian and Swiss developments in timber buildings, the creation of wearable simulations of construction worker illnesses as training aids, and how military research helps to create safer civilian infrastructure.
