ICE responds to Government's Spending Review

Date
04 September 2019

Responding to today's Spending Review by Chancellor of the Exchequer Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP, Nick Baveystock, Director General of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), said:

"The Chancellor is right to recognise the role of infrastructure in delivering long-term social and economic benefits for the United Kingdom. However, if we are to ensure that infrastructure investment is deployed in such a way that it benefits the whole of the UK, it must be strategically developed and take a coordinated and long-term approach.

"As such, ICE is happy that the Chancellor has recognised the work of the APPG on Infrastructure, which has focused this year on delivering an answer on what should be in the promised National Infrastructure Strategy.

"What we need now is delivery and money, until we see that, today's announcements remain as just intentions; the public will not be happy if these promises on infrastructure turn out to be short-term soundbites."
