Going back to school, without the homework.
Civil engineers looking to give back to society and practice professional skills are being encouraged to volunteer as school and college governors, in response to a national shortage.
As part of ICE’s charitable work, the institution supports the government-backed organisation Inspiring Governance in recruiting school governors for schools in England. Inspiring Governance recently hit a milestone of signing up 5,000 additional governors, including many ICE engineers, but a shortfall in governors remains.
Why become a governor?
Anybody over 18 can be a governor, and volunteers don’t have to be a parent.
The remit of a school or college governor is a strategic one, providing volunteers with an opportunity to gain valuable board-level experience. Making the best decisions in the interests of children will test skills of judgement – a useful skill in a professional capacity, too.
In addition, becoming part of a governing board provides civil engineers with the chance to support their local communities by making schools and colleges better for everyone.
What skills can civil engineers offer to schools?
Engineering professionals have a range of skills to offer to schools as governors, such as:
- The ability to challenge, ask questions, and seek solutions.
- Strategic leadership, planning and project management.
- An analytical approach, problem solving skills and attention to detail.
- Being collaborative and working as a team to achieve a common goal.
The role usually takes no more than about five to eight hours a month, and fits around a typical day-to-day role.

School governors in the rest of the UK
Other UK nations have school governors, too:
- Wales – contact the local authority
- Northern Ireland - eani.org.uk/school-management/school-governors
- Scotland (a similar role on parent councils) – check the school's website
