ICE is delighted to announce that 64 QUEST Undergraduate Scholarships have been awarded. This comes, despite the disruption caused by Covid-19 to examinations across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The following students have won the distinction of being called an ICE QUEST Undergraduate Scholar in 2020:

Support to prospective students – securing the pipeline of future civil engineers.

The year’s earlier challenges of disrupted schooling and exam uncertainty were heightened when on A-Level results day in August over 40% of grades were lowered initially, throwing university offers into chaos. The ICE QUEST team gave much support to the scholarship candidates throughout the intervening period, as did universities, giving advice and liasing with sponsorship companies to ensure that everyone had the same opportunities as previously expected.

The team also rallied to adapt the QUEST interview day – usually held in early September at One Great George Street – one of ICE’s biggest events with up to 350 interviews scheduled over one day and a large careers fair hosted by the sponsor companies. This all took place online instead, with a digital platform showcasing video presentations from the sponsoring companies, speeches from key people including ICE Past-President Paul Sheffield and former QUEST students.

Sponsor companies also went above and beyond in their support of the scheme this year. A comment by one QUEST sponsor demonstrates the positive attitude that has shone through: “If they’ve gone through the pandemic, disrupted study and now this, (including the challenges of the exam grading process and university entry period) then they’re going to be the most resilient and employable young people we’ve ever seen.”

We’d like to thank all the QUEST Undergraduate Scholarship sponsoring companies and trusts, and of course ICE members who continue to support the scheme by giving a yearly donation with their subscriptions payment.
