ICE South West searches for STEM Ambassador of the Year 2021

STEM volunteers in South West England are being encouraged to step forward to celebrate the work they do to promote civil engineering and STEM subjects to schools and young people in the region.

Entries are being sought for the ICE South West STEM Ambassador of the Year 2021. The award honours an ICE member who has shown outstanding commitment to the industry by giving their time to inspire the next generation of civil engineers.

In 2020, the South West accolade was awarded to Sandhya Sreekumar, a civil engineer working for Tony Gee in Gloucester, who has spent years volunteering to promote science and engineering in schools.

She said: "I believe the purpose of our profession is to have a positive or useful impact on our environment, whether this is taken literally to mean our ecological impact, or our impact on infrastructure and the built environment – or more figuratively, our impact on the social and personal environment.

"STEM ambassadors can prove vital in accomplishing the latter, and not only through showing that science and engineering can be engaging and absorbing. By making people from all backgrounds aware from a young age of available opportunities, arising concerns, and the value of their own experiences, we can encourage more students to take up the mantle of engineering themselves."

Competition criteria

This year, due to the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic, members can apply to become the ICE South West STEM Ambassador of the Year if they've taken part in a single STEM activity in the past 12 months, including a digital event.

The deadline for entries is 5pm on Monday 1 March 2021.
