ICE welcomes students for inaugural open day

The institution opened its doors to students from five London-based academic partners, with plans to do so again in future.

The ICE welcomed students from across London to its One Great George Street headquarters on 7 December for its first-ever Student Open Day.

Invited from five London-based academic partner universities, 160 students arrived at the ICE HQ to learn more about the services and benefits offered to student members.

The students were from:

  • Imperial College
  • University of East London
  • London South Bank University
  • Kingston University
  • University College London

The new initiative set out to provide more support and opportunities to students through meeting industry contacts and curricular enrichment in the form of a professionalism and ethics lecture given by an ICE fellow.

Students also learned about the history of the ICE, as recounted by the character of Isambard Kingdom Brunel on a tour of One Great George Street, taking in the facilities the space has to offer.

“The top benefit for these students was the support they received towards their career development,” explained Elena Rinaldi, ICE’s academic partnerships manager.

“By giving them the chance to network with industry professionals, the students were able to learn more about life after their studies and how ICE can support them in their career path,” Rinaldi said.

The open day was supported by 16 ICE volunteers who were on hand to guide students around the building and answer questions.

This proved mutually enriching for these volunteers, who were able to demonstrate professional commitment and communication, two of the seven attributes required to complete initial professional development (IPD) records.

With positive feedback from both attendees and volunteers, the academic partnership team is examining options for hosting similar events with a wider reach in 2023 and beyond.
