ICE's global Pitch 200 competition is now open

The competition that challenges ICE members to use their creativity to communicate an aspect of civil engineering is back. 

ICE's global Pitch 200 competition is now open

Civil engineers across the world with a passion for what they do and a desire to communicate with a wider audience are being encouraged to put themselves forward for this year’s ICE Pitch 200 competition.

Pitch 200 challenges ICE members to use their creativity to explain a civil engineering concept or project in an accessible and entertaining self-filmed video, lasting just 200 seconds.

And, unlike in recent years, the 2021 competition is open to ICE members anywhere in the world.

Video entries are being sought throughout the ICE regions in the UK and internationally, between now and 12 May 2021.

After a shortlisting stage, the finalists will go through to an online vote this summer, where the public will choose the overall winner.

Wendy Blundell, director ICE regions, said: “Last year, we saw some truly creative video entries, with members using props and locations to bring their pitch videos to life.

“With the 2020 UK final attracting more than 3,000 votes, we’re going global, expanding the audience and rewarding those taking part with an international platform to share their passion for civil engineering.”

Last year, most Pitch 200 entrants recorded their videos on a smartphone, but members can use whatever device they have to hand.

The videos are judged on their content, clarity of explanation and creativity not production values, but participants do need to ensure they can be seen and heard.

ICE has produced some guidelines for members with top tips for filming Pitch 200 videos.

The competition aims to showcase the diverse impact that civil engineering has on every aspect of modern society. Previous finalists created pitch videos on all manner of subjects, from water conservation and the circular economy to geotechnics and concrete innovation.

Food has consistently proved the most popular prop among Pitch 200 contestants, with cake, rice, pasta, chocolate biscuits and even onions making an appearance!

‘Exposure I never imagined’

By entering Pitch 200, ICE members get to showcase their ability to communicate complex ideas in a way that everyone can understand.

And with the videos also being shared via social media, it’s a chance to raise your profile, according to last year’s winner, Rui Jian Tee.

Representing London and the South East region, he won the most votes with a video about the use of plastic geogrid technology.

“ICE Pitch 200 gave me the opportunity to connect with others virtually. Engineers from around the world (Scandinavia, India, Hong Kong, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore) messaged me to give their words of congratulations,” he said.

“The competition gave me the exposure I never imagined I could have achieved, and I am glad to be able to connect with engineers around the world to broaden my perspectives, too.”

The 2020 runner-up was Jasmine Brittan, a civil engineering student at the University of Warwick, who represented East and West Midlands with a pitch video about the future of transport.

She said: “I applied to the ICE Pitch 200 competition as I saw it as a great opportunity to expand my network and apply the knowledge I have learnt in my degree so far.

"With university being online during the summer term, I was actively looking for civil engineering opportunities when I stumbled upon the ICE Pitch 200 competition. After seeing videos of past competitions online, this was something I knew I wanted to take part in!”

How to enter Pitch 200

It’s free and simple to enter ICE Pitch 200; full details and an application form are available at 200, where you can also watch the videos created by last year’s finalists.

The three most popular Pitch 200 entries in 2021, as decided in the online vote, will attract cash prizes: first - £400; second - £200; third - £150 (GBP).

The deadline for entries is Wednesday 12 May 2021.
