Professor Richard Susskind OBE to address next ICE Strategy Session

Professor Richard Susskind OBE, leading author and speaker on the future of professions, will address the ICE Strategy Session: Covid-19, Artificial Intelligence, and the future of the Civil Engineer on Tuesday 8 December, alongside a panel of senior industry experts.

Professor Susskind, author of The Future of the Professions, argues that any assumption engineering jobs are safe from destruction by digital technologies is fundamentally misplaced and that, instead of competing with digital technology, civil engineers increasingly need to be involved in building the systems that will change or replace civil engineering jobs of today.

Since the 1990s, Professor Susskind has warned that the impact of digital technologies on professional jobs is seriously underestimated. This includes the impact of artificial intelligence, while the Covid-19 pandemic has also brought many of these potential shifts in approach into much sharper focus.

It raises some very important questions about what future civil engineering roles will be, the business models that can support civil engineering and what training and education is needed to get them there.

Following a welcome from ICE President Rachel Skinner, Professor Susskind will be joined by five panellists, all with leading roles in industry, with a Q&A discussion to be hosted by former President’s Future Leader and Site engineer with Taylor Woodrow, Hayley Jackson.

This free online session brings together key voices in the infrastructure sector, all of whom who are grappling with the potential impacts of changes to civil engineering from digital technologies and artificial intelligence.

Professor Susskind’s keynote presentation will be followed by responses and input from the following industry experts:

  • Steve Tarr, Managing Director-Major Projects, Balfour Beatty’, is responsible for the Group's Major Projects business which spans an extensive major infrastructure project portfolio across the UK including HS2, nuclear new build at Hinkley, nuclear decommissioning at Sellafield, Thames Tideway and Crossrail.

  • Mark Naysmith, CEO, WSP, will focus on the role of artificial intelligence in setting and implementing strategic direction, and how technical innovation, operational efficiency and leadership are needed to ensure the best outcomes for stakeholders, clients, and staff.

  • Suzannah Nichol, CEO, BuildUK, will focus on the issues for improving business performance, increasing productivity and recruiting, training and retaining talent across the industry.

  • Simon Adams, Head of Commercial Crossrail 2 – Transport for London, will examine the issues for transport infrastructure, based on his current role at Transport For London.

  • Chris Young, Chairman of the Executive Board of Tony Gee, will explore this issue from the perspective of improving the capabilities of a business and fostering the development of staff.
