Skanska engineer wins ICE East of England Best Technician Student award

Neil Thompson, an assistant engineer from Bury St Edmunds, has been crowned East of England’s Best Technician Student by ICE.

The annual award is made using nominations from course tutors.

Thompson started studying part-time at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) and working for Skanska in Ipswich in 2015.

He received a cash prize, shield and certificate, which were presented to him by ICE Suffolk Branch Chairman Peter Wyllie at the Skanska office.

“It was great to meet Neil who is dedicated and progressing to complete the honours degree,” said Wyllie.

“There is a shortage of civil engineers entering the profession, and we hope to attract more interest in this fantastic career.”

Thompson admitted that studying part-time and working was quite a commitment, especially with a young family, but said that he's finding the challenge worth the effort, and that he's thoroughly enjoying his job.

His manager Chris Hubbard said: “This is great recognition for Neil, who is a valuable member of the team. We’re delighted to support his development and I believe we can offer some great opportunities for his career here at Skanska.”
