The deadline for the WES Top 50 Women in Engineering poll has been extended to April 23 – make sure you get your nomination in for someone who has been or is currently an apprentice
The Top 50 Women in Engineering (WE50) list was first released in 2016, highlighting the work of 50 brilliant women engineers of all ages and different career stages every year. Last year, 14 of those included in the list were ICE members or Fellows.
Founded by the Women's Engineering Society (WES) in 2016, it is a UK awards event linked to International Women in Engineering Day: a global celebration of women in engineering that takes place on 23 June each year.
This year's WE50 will be announced on Friday 21 June in a supplement published by the Guardian newspaper. The WE50 winners will be invited to attend the WES Centenary Gala Dinner on Friday 21 June where their achievements will be celebrated.
The theme in 2019 is 'Apprentices' and WES will be awarding the Top 50 Women who are either currently serving as apprentices or have previously been in an apprenticeship within an engineering or related role.
According to WES, while women make up around 14% of engineers in the UK, just over 7% of engineering apprentices are female. By selecting the Top 50 Women in Engineering – Current and Former Apprentices as its theme for 2019, WES hopes to highlight the terrific opportunities that engineering apprenticeships offer women.
Engineering Apprenticeships offer an alternative route to a career in engineering and female engineering apprentices have the same access to career progression as those who have followed the degree route. ICE has partnered with WISE and SEMTA to launch a toolkit aimed at encouraging women and girl into apprenticeships.
WES is a charity that inspires and supports women and girls to achieve their potential as engineers, scientists and technical leaders. ICE is a long-term supporter, regularly hosting events and activities in support of INWED which year takes place on 23 June.
