Vicky Ford MP elected new chair of APPGI

Vicky Ford MP has been appointed the new chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Infrastructure (APPGI).

The APPGI works to highlight the importance of infrastructure, engineering and the use of underground space to the economy and society. It aims to act as a champion on behalf of the sector and show policymakers why and how we should invest in, plan and deliver the infrastructure and underground structures that Britain requires.

Vicky Ford, MP for Chelmsford, is a long-standing member of the APPG on Infrastructure.

“I’m very pleased to be elected chair of the group and am looking forward to bringing together industry leaders and my fellow parliamentarians to discuss the pertinent issues facing the infrastructure sector.

“The UK needs strong, reliable and affordable infrastructure for the future, and that requires long-term planning. I hope that as a group, we can encourage members to work together and help shape the future of UK infrastructure.”

Ford is known for being a strong voice on numerous issues, in particular on infrastructure investment, women’s rights and healthcare.

Before sitting as an MEP for the East of England, Ford had a 14-year career in banking where she specialised in infrastructure and project financing.

During her time as an MEP, she ran the Single Market Committee of the EU Parliament. It was during this time the Committee was able to bring an end to mobile roaming charges in Europe.

Ford becomes the second chair of the APPGI, succeeding Stephen Hammond MP, who was appointed Minister of State for the Department of Health and Social Care in November 2018.

The other officers of the APPGI are:

  • Alan Brown MP (SNP) – Co-Chair
  • Chi Onwurah MP (Labour) – Officer
  • Paul Sweeney MP (Labour) – Officer
  • Baroness Neville-Rolfe (Conservative) – Officer
  • Lord Berkeley (Labour) – Officer
