ICE piloted its very first Summer Project scheme for Student members this year, delivered online with the support of our Graduate member volunteers. The initiative received rave reviews from students.

With many civil engineering students having their work placements or internships cancelled this summer due to the impact of coronavirus, the pilot scheme was developed to give ICE Student members the opportunity to gain valuable experience to aid their professional development and get a head start towards becoming professionally qualified with ICE.

We trialled the new initiative throughout July and August with a select group of 53 Student members, across 18 teams. Each team of students was supervised by a graduate tutor who designed work packages for them to complete, based on real-life civil engineering projects. Many students were able to record their Summer Project experience against the ICE attributes, which was then assessed, contributing to their progress towards professional qualification.

Students were very positive about the ICE Summer Project, rating the scheme 4.67 out of 5 stars! At the end of the scheme, each team was also invited to submit a video summary of their experience.

We – and our teams of students – are immensely grateful to the graduate tutors whose invaluable support helped to make the scheme so rewarding for the participants.

Following on from the success of the pilot programme we will consider how to further develop and expand the programme in 2021. Look out for updates and opportunities to get involved next year.
