Pitch 200 draws on ICE members engineering creativity to demonstrate an aspect of civil engineering to a public audience – with only 200 seconds to get the message across.

Ellen’s video was chosen from a short list of three which included Pete Burns, Structural Technician, Ove Arup and Vice Chair ICE Wales Cymru and Jess Dunn, Engineer at AECOM and Chair’s Apprentice ICE Wales Cymru.

Pete presented a ‘Thought Through Lockdown’ looking at Design Philosophy and suggesting a Better World is a Balanced World, whilst Jess took pavement construction as her theme and explained in an entertaining way using items from her kitchen.

Ellen was recently awarded a First in Civil and Environmental Engineering Degree from Cardiff University and used the subject of her dissertation, waste management, for her video pitch. Using clever, hand drawn animation, Ellen’s video highlighted the issues around Waste and the Circular Economy in the progression to net zero targets. Her pitch took the viewer through the journey of waste, explaining the process in detail and delivering a case for change, elements that the judges found thought provoking and with sound reasoning.

Ellen Thomas said: ” I’m very excited that my video has been chosen as the winner of the Welsh heat! I chose the subject of waste management as it is a topic close to my heart. I hope that this short video helps bring waste management to the attention of others and gets people really thinking about our future”.

Keith Jones Director ICE Wales Cymru said: “It was a delight to see that Ellen had won the Wales heat of the Pitch200 competition for 2020; Ellen’s video was informative and a clever, entertaining way of presenting an important topic – the Circular Economy. We wish Ellen all the very best in the UK finals – do us proud Ellen”.

Ellen’s video will now go through to the National Pitch 200 Final in September when a virtual video exhibition will be set up on the ICE website and votes cast by ICE members and the public.
