Shale gas policy position

Date
17 December 2013

Shale gas is an underground resource exploited through a process called hydraulic fracturing. In recent years the UK Government has supported the exploration of shale gas reserves due to the:

  • Transformational impact of shale gas in the US
  • Discovery of potentially exploitable reserves in the UK
  • Debate around the affordability, security of supply and decarbonisation of the UK’s energy

This paper provides a civil engineering perspective on the issues and solutions.
