Shale gas is an underground resource exploited through a process called hydraulic fracturing. In recent years the UK Government has supported the exploration of shale gas reserves due to the:
- Transformational impact of shale gas in the US
- Discovery of potentially exploitable reserves in the UK
- Debate around the affordability, security of supply and decarbonisation of the UK’s energy
