Resilience Champions – share your successes in building an inclusive and sustainable world

The ICE has launched an initiative to recognise people who are putting nature and people at the heart of their decision making.

‘Resilience Champions – building an inclusive and sustainable world’ aims to recognise efforts by those working across the built environment sector to make their infrastructure projects resilient, sustainable, and/or inclusive by design.

Professor Anusha Shah, ICE senior vice president, said: "To build a cleaner, greener, sustainable world we aspire to live in, we need to build infrastructure that meets not just the needs of now – but the future.

"We must consider the challenges facing the planet, from climate change, biodiversity decline to population growth, and meet them head-on.

"To do this, we need to consider new working practices, and ensure decisions about sustainability, resilience and inclusivity happen together.

"The ICE’s Resilience Champions programme aims to celebrate those who are making progress in these areas."

Sharing best practice

As well as highlighting the efforts of civil engineers and built environment professionals, the initiative will collate and publish best practice and solutions that can be replicated.

The aim is to encourage a change in mindset about what ‘good’ looks like.

Professor Shah added: "Resilience Champions are individuals who are helping build a resilient, sustainable and inclusive future – and we want to share and celebrate their efforts.

"Through building a database of examples, we hope to inspire people to try new ideas, methods, and take risks to build a better future for society."

Who can apply to be a Resilience Champion?

Applications are open to anyone who has held an active role within an engineering project. They do not have to be ICE members, or engineers.

Applicants will be asked to provide details about how they have integrated resilience considerations into a project, scheme or initiative, and also demonstrate their consideration of sustainability and/or inclusivity within the project.

The initiative complements the institution’s existing Carbon Champions programme, which celebrates engineers who are making quantifiable carbon savings in their projects.
