The ICE is looking for a Fellow to become chair of the Professional Conduct Panel (PCP), an important role in maintaining the highest standards of professional conduct within the institution.
This is an opportunity for an individual with strong leadership skills to play a central role in upholding the integrity and trustworthiness of the civil engineering profession.
About the Professional Conduct Panel
The Professional Conduct Panel is one of several member-led panels and committees at the ICE.
The PCP is tasked with conducting initial investigations into formal allegations of professional misconduct made against ICE members.
Where the panel finds that a member has a case to answer, the matter is referred to the Disciplinary Board (DB) for further action.
The chair of the PCP plays an integral role in guiding these investigations and ensuring that all cases are handled with fairness and impartiality.
The panel meets quarterly to discuss complaints and reviews cases between meetings through sub-committees known as 'quorums'.
On average, panel members review about 15 cases per year, ensuring that the full panel can engage in informed discussions during quarterly meetings.
The chair is responsible for conducting these meetings, ensuring the full agenda is covered, and that discussions remain focused and productive within the allotted time.
Panellists play a vital role in upholding the ICE’s rules of professional conduct and safeguarding the profession’s standards.
The chair’s roles and responsibilities
- Lead quarterly PCP meetings, ensuring that all complaints are discussed thoroughly and impartially, and the full agenda is addressed efficiently.
- Guide the panel in conducting initial reviews of complaints to determine whether there’s a case to answer.
- Ensure that cases are referred appropriately to the Disciplinary Board for formal hearings, where required.
- Work with panel members to review cases between meetings, ensuring all necessary preparation is ready for quarterly meetings.
- Uphold the ICE’s Code of Professional Conduct and ensure its consistent application across all cases considered by the panel.
What type of candidate are we looking for?
- Candidates must be Fellows of the institution, with a strong commitment to upholding the highest professional standards.
- Excellent leadership, chairing experience, and/or skills are essential to manage panel meetings effectively and ensure fair decision-making.
- A broad knowledge of the civil engineering profession, including familiarity with the practical challenges faced by members, is critical.
- Candidates must be well versed in the ICE Code of Professional Conduct and its real-world application within the profession.
- A keen eye for detail, impartiality in decision-making, and strong communication skills are key attributes for success in this role.

Commitment and remuneration
The chair of the PCP typically serves for a term of three years, with the potential for extension. The role is unpaid, but expenses are reimbursed.
