A ‘Question Time’ panel debate in the aftermath of the HS2 cancellation.
People are being asked to submit their questions for a ‘Question Time’ panel debate on the UK’s ability to do major infrastructure projects.
It comes after the northern leg of HS2 was cancelled last year. HS2 was supposed to be the biggest rail investment ever made in the north of England, and Europe’s largest infrastructure project.
The changes to the HS2 plans are only the latest example that has led to the UK's ability to deliver major infrastructure projects to be called into question.
The ICE believes that there's an opportunity to learn lessons from the project for future infrastructure policy and decision-making, and has brought together a panel of experts to debate the issue at an event on 29 April 2024.
Who will be on the panel?
The confirmed panellists include:
- John Pelton, enterprise programme director at Costain, and previously programme partner director for East West Rail at Jacobs
- Dr Jennifer Schooling, professor of digital innovation and smart places at Anglia Ruskin University
- Mark Reynolds, chairman and group chief executive at MACE, co-chair of Construction Leadership Council
- Svetlana João, structural engineer, TYPSA, and ICE President Future Leader 2023
The event will be chaired by Gavin Pearson, editor of New Civil Engineer.

The event is a public, hybrid event.
It is free to register, and will take place:
- In person in the ICE’s headquarters at One Great George Street, Westminster, London; and
- Virtually via Zoom.

Online attendees will have the chance to comment and ask additional questions during the panel debate.
However, questions sent in advance will take priority.
