In response to the news that the government is formally launching its energy efficiency task force, Chris Richards, Director of Policy at the Institution of Civil Engineers said:
“As a nation, lowering energy demand must play a role in us reaching our climate goals. It is something that the country will have to do and doing it sooner rather than later will cost less in the long term. Reducing demand through energy efficiency measures, such as retrofitting buildings, can happen quickly and will deliver social, economic, and environmental benefits almost immediately.
“However, ICE data from 2022 shows that the public feel it will be difficult to improve the energy efficiency of their homes on their own. The task force should prioritise providing guidance and policies designed to support people and businesses in their efforts to reduce energy demand and usage – supporting positive behavioural changes will make the biggest difference in the long run.”
