Engineer and academic achieves elite status

Engineer and academic Dr Daphne O’Doherty has been elected as a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) following an invitation from ICE President Professor Tim Broyd.

Presidential Invitation for ICE Fellowship is offered to those who have made a substantial contribution to and achieved a well-recognised reputation in the field of civil engineering and the built environment. Respected internationally, ICE Fellowship is the highest grade of ICE membership and a benchmark for those practising at the top level within the profession.

Dr O'Doherty, who is Head of Engineering at the University of South Wales, may now add the letters "FICE" to her name.

Keith Jones, ICE Wales Cymru Director, commented:

"Gaining ICE Fellowship is an exceptional achievement and I warmly congratulate Daphne on reaching the higher echelons of civil engineering. This highly-respected accolade recognises a significant contribution to the civil engineering profession and seniority in the industry.

He continued, "The University of South Wales is a major engineering university, founded by industry and the professions. Daphne's ICE Fellowship will enhance and support the Institution and provide a strong link between the University and ICE. I also believe that Daphne will be an outstanding ambassador for ICE."

Dr O'Doherty said:

"I am delighted to gain Fellowship of the ICE and look forward to many more years of involvement with the Institution and the Civil Engineering profession. It is very rewarding to help support the students through their studies as they develop into engineers and progress in the profession."
