ICE Student Committee 'Fishbowl' networking event a huge success

The ICE UTS Student Committee held a “Fishbowl” networking event at the UTS City Campus on Thursday 14th April proudly sponsored by Aecom. The event saw the UTS Committee host its inaugural event for 2016, and it was a hit!

The Night in Numbers

2 Hours of questioning, contemplation and consumption
5 engineering companies represented
80+ attendees
200 slices of pizza devoured

The "Fishbowl" concept comprises an inner circle, or fishbowl, of ICE Members with the attendees of the event circling around, engaging in a series of informal discussions about the ICE and the civil engineering profession. This steady flow of attendees around the fishbowl created an interactive and engaging platform to pose questions, and listen in on other conversations to spark their own discussions.

What Happened?

The event drew a larger than expected crowd of around 70 – 80 attendees who questioned, contemplated and consumed throughout the evening. The night provided budding civil engineering students from local universities with an insight into the ICE and what it could offer them now, and further into their careers. The student committee received positive feedback from attendees who enjoyed the opportunity to meet likeminded individuals and receive guidance from engineering professionals.

What Did We Learn?

Feedback from our ICE members highlighted the following areas of interest from students:

  • Professional Development
  • Engagement with the broader civil engineering industry
  • CV advice
  • Mock interview
  • Access to industry events

What Next?

Upon receiving feedback from the students via ICE Members, the Sydney student committee is busily preparing for a number of events for 2016, including:

  • AGM to elect new university committees
  • Technical Talks to further students engagement with the ICE and civil engineering
  • Collaboration with Universities and ICE to strengthen ties between both institutions and provide students access to professional engineers

Our gratitude to Aecom for making the event possible with their generous sponsorship. A big thank you to all ICE members who volunteered their time in organising and attending the event. And finally thanks to all those who attended the event and made it such an enjoyable and rewarding evening.

We hope to see you at an ICE event soon!
