Why should you read this book?

The book is one of three volumes of ground improvement case histories which between them must describe every technique available. They are not so much books to read as volumes to keep to hand and dip into as needed, and to consult for previous experience and practice.

There is perhaps too much emphasis on the case histories as I somewhat miss introductory chapters that would explain the theory. One or two of the examples are old (the Seikan Tunnel, say) and the photographs can be a little dark and hard to read.

Nonetheless, the book is a valuable compilation, covering the subject from older methods such as electro-osmotic stabilization to the more modern practices of soil and deep mixing and jet grouting.

The other volumes are of similar length (about 700 pages and 22 chapters) and are about grouting, compaction, embankments, consolidation and physical methods like stone columns.

Who should read this book?

Practising geotechnical engineers, especially those working in ground improvement; engineers who understand geotechnics but are not specialists may find it useful; I think students will need to supplement the material with a more basic textbook; academics and researchers
