Collaboration is a common principle of both NEC and ICG. The two got together to develop a document to provide a clear and valuable guidance on how to use NEC3 contracts for alliance arrangements and on the documents that should be developed in preparing the terms of an alliance agreement. In doing so, the guidelines build on the previous ICG Alliancing Best Practice material and Code of Practice for Alliancing.

Andy Mitchell, Chair of the Infrastructure Client Group and CEO of Thames Tideway Tunnel, says "More collaborative approaches and integrated team working have been actively supported by the Infrastructure Client Group (ICG) and more widely by government and industry. Alliancing is one form of collaborative working that has been successfully adopted across a range of infrastructure organisations."

What is an alliance?

An alliance is an arrangement where a collaborative and integrated team is brought together from across the extended supply-chain, with shared goals to meet the client's requirements.

The adoption of collaborative approaches and integrated team working has been supported by the Government and industry. Several infrastructure organisations have adopted the alliancing, as a form of collaborative working.
