New IPD requirement for candidates undertaking an HKIE scheme A Training Agreement

A reminder that we are introducing a new IPD requirement for candidates undertaking their initial professional training under a Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) scheme A training agreement (civil and geotechnical).

Initial professional development (IPD) is where you develop the special skills, knowledge and experience that help you to become professionally qualified.

  • Author: Ed Horton

The change will only affect candidates who start their HKIE scheme A training from 1 January 2017.

Those already committed to a HKIE scheme A training agreement or starting one before 1 January 2017 will not be affected by the change.

What is changing?

Any candidates entering into a HKIE scheme A training agreement from 1 January 2017 will require a further 12 months’ experience after having completed their HKIE scheme A training before they can sit the ICE Professional Review.

These candidates will be able to apply for Professional Review before having gained the full 12 months’ post-HKIE scheme A training experience, as long as they will have gained the required additional 12 months’ professional experience by the time they sit their Professional Review.

Who will be affected?

Any candidates entering into a HKIE scheme A training agreement from 1 January 2017.

Who will NOT be affected by this change?

  • Candidates who started their HKIE scheme A training agreement (civil or geotechnical division) before 1 January 2017
  • Candidates with certificate of successful completion of HKIE scheme A (civil or geotechnical division) applying to re-sit their Professional Review
  • Candidates not undertaking HKIE scheme A training, for example those following an ICE Training Scheme or ICE mentor-supported training
  • Candidates who have completed an ICE career appraisal or member assessment

Reason for the change

This change brings ICE’s requirements in line with HKIE’s own requirements. It will provide HKIE scheme A candidates with a period of consolidation such that they are suitably prepared and experienced before applying for a Professional Review.
