A special plaque has been mounted in the Tower’s entrance, in recognition of its historic importance as a work of civil engineering.

Partners were also presented with a certificate to mark the occasion.

The presentation was made by ICE North West Chair, John Gatheral, and Chris Hudson of ICE’s Lancashire Branch, who nominated the Tower for the award.

Kenny Mew of Merlin Entertainments described the honour as “Amazing” and Blackpool Council representative, Cllr Gillian Campbell, said it was “Absolutely fabulous”.

John Gatheral summed up his thoughts on Blackpool Tower as “Perhaps the foremost piece of engineering works on the British coastline”.

A video of the presentation can be viewed here.

Blackpool Tower received the accolade earlier this year at ICE North West’s Civil Engineering Awards ceremony.

Nominations for our 2017 awards will be opening shortly with a range of people and project categories, including heritage. Email nwawards@ice.org.uk to be added to our mailing list.
