A set of chimneys, a cycle route and a new centre for cancer patients are just some of the projects shortlisted in this year's ICE London Civil Engineering Awards.

The eight projects will compete for a number of awards, including the Londonist People's Choice Award where members of the public are invited to vote for their favourite.

The shortlist of eight projects includes:

The deconstruction and reconstruction of the iconic Battersea PowerStation chimneys.

The Bermondsey Dive-Under, a complex part of the Thameslink Programme.

The construction of tunnels and platforms for Crossrail at Liverpool Street.

The building of Custom House Station which used prefabrication and standardised components.

The new state-of-the-art Guy's Cancer Centre building, the first centre in Europe to have radiotherapy machines above ground.

The Hampstead Heath Ponds Project, an environmental solution to eliminate the risk of dam failure.

The construction of new platforms at London Bridge Station for increased-capacity and more frequent trains above a new concourse the size of Wembley football stadium.

The North-South Cycle Superhighway, a high quality, substantially segregated cycle route between Elephant and Castle and Stonecutter Street.

Projects were shortlisted by a panel of senior engineers and industry figures. They will be visited by a panel of judges, with the winner announced at the ICE London Civil Engineering Awards on 25 May 2016. The glamorous ceremony will be hosted by BBC London presenter Alice Bhandhukravi.

Suzanne Moroney, ICE London Director said: "Whilst infrastructure is vitally important, it is often hidden from public view. This makes it hard for us to appreciate just how much work goes into keeping our city running.

"The ICE London Awards provide the opportunity to showcase some of that great work. From cycling to flood defences, our shortlist this year gives a snapshot of the incredible projects civil engineers are engaged in – and the wide variety of their work.

"I'd encourage all to vote for the Londonist People's Choice Award for the project that best inspires you. Just go to our website, and select your favourite!".
