Technician Member (TMICE)

Technician Membership (TMICE) of ICE can be awarded to a wide range of engineers practising in the broad area of civil engineering. Qualified ICE Technician Members gain a greater recognition for their skills in delivering technical solutions within civil engineering teams.

Benefits of becoming a Technician Member

There are a host of benefits to support qualified Technician Members in their civil engineering career. These include the use of the designatory letters TMICE and the opportunity to register with the Engineering Council as an Engineering Technician (EngTech).

Routes to becoming Technician Member (TMICE)

There are three stages in qualifying as a Technician Member (TMICE) via the standard route.   

 

1. Educational Base

The educational benchmark for Technician Membership and for Engineering Council registration (EngTech TMICE) is completion of either:

  • BTEC National Award (Certificates or Diplomas) in Construction Pathways,

or  

  • ICE approved NVQ/SVQ level 3   

If your academic qualification does not meet the Engineering Council benchmark, you may demonstrate that you have compensated for the shortfall in a number of other ways. See ICE 3004A for details of how you can do this.

2. Initial Professional Development

Initial Professional Development (IPD) can be satisfied by completion of an ICE Approved Training Scheme.

For this option you will need to be a Technician Graduate member of ICE which is available at s special concessionary rate. For more details and how to apply please refer to the ICE Graduates page.

For these options you do not need to be a Technician Graduate member, however becoming a member offers a range of benefits to help you towards professional qualification.

If you choose not to complete one of the above three options, your Lead Sponsor at Professional Review will have to authenticate your IPD. For more details please see Appendix A of ICE 3002A.

3. Professional Review - making an application

In order to become a Technician Member of ICE (TMICE) and registered with the Engineering Council as a Engineering Technician (EngTech), you will be required to successfully pass a Professional Review.

Non-standard routes to TMICE

1. Technical Report Route

If you do not have the necessary formal academic qualifications required for the most appropriate grade of membership for you but have sufficient experience within the broad area of civil engineering you could be eligible for this route. Find out more about this route.  

2. European Directive Route

If you are professionally qualified as a civil engineer within the European Union, you could be eligible for this route. Find out more about this route.

ICE publication of the names of applicants for Membership (By Law 16) 

Applicants' names will be published in New Civil Engineer, New Civil Engineer International and on the ICE website for a period of 28 days to allow ICE members to communicate in writing to the Director General if they have any reason to give why an applicant is not a fit and proper person to become a member. This list will be published in the membership downloads section of the website.
