State of the Nation: Waste and Resource Management

There is an enormous amount of value locked up in the UK’s waste.

Unlocking this value will require investment in infrastructure, at least £10-20bn in the period up to 2020. Over the next 40 years this infrastructure will also need to evolve to cope with the changing demands placed on it.

In the latest State of the Nation report, the Institution of Civil Engineers sets forth a series of recommendations that we believe is needed to improve the state of the nation’s infrastructure and associated services.  These actions include:

1. Continue to increase the quality as well as the quantity of recycled and recovered materials

2. Government must facilitate private investment in waste and resource management infrastructure

3. Ensure the UK has a waste and resource management infrastructure that can adapt to the changing demands that will be placed upon it
