The objective of the SGG is to promote the Geotechnical Engineering Profession mainly by arranging learned meetings and bringing high profile national and international lectures to Scotland. This is coupled with encouraging young people into the discipline and promoting young engineers.
The SGG promotes the understanding and development of geotechnical engineering in Scotland. The SGG is a special interest group of the Institution of Civil Engineers and is a regional group of the British Geotechnical Association. The inauguration of the SGG took place in October 1966 at the Glasgow headquarters of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders. Professor Hugh Sutherland was the first Chairman. A brief history of the early days of geotechnical engineering in Scotland and the SGG has been prepared by one of our founder members, Sam Thorburn. Please follow this link to download the History of the SGG.
The SGG arranges meetings, seminars and competitions in order to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, knowledge and experience concerning the latest developments in the continually developing field of geotechnical engineering. Meetings are often held jointly with other institutions and organisations and are usually held on the second Tuesday of the month between October and March in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee. You will find details of the current programme in the meetings section. A link to our Chairperson's report and meeting programme for the 2012/13 session can be found here. We are always happy to receive suggestions regarding topics for evening meetings. We look forward to seeing you at the meetings.
If you have any questions and are interested in attending our meetings, or wish more information please do not hesitate to contact our Chair, Dr Michael Brown, or our Honorary Secretary, Ross Turnbull, at the email addresses given above right.
