QUEST offers scholarships of up to £2,500 per year to students about to start an ICE accredited civil engineering degree in the UK. The majority of scholarships are sponsored by civil engineering and construction companies, QUEST scholars are matched with a company, who they work with during the summer holidays, under the expectation that after graduation they’ll join them full time.
The scholarship is well known and respected within the civil engineering industry and offers great opportunities to top civil engineering students including:
- Financial support of £2,500 each year
- Paid work placements every summer
- Potential full time employment with a leading civil engineering or construction company after graduation
- Gaining knowledge and experience that will give you a head start in becoming a professionally qualified civil engineer
- Developing skills that enhance your career potential and CV
Types of scholarship
There are two types of scholarship offered:
► Company sponsored scholarship
Almost all scholarships are sponsored by a leading civil engineering or construction company.
► QUEST only scholarship
A small amount of scholarships that aren’t sponsored by a company are awarded every year. These scholarships are fully funded by QUEST or the C F Lunoe Trust, with scholars expected to organise their own work placements every summer with a civil engineering or construction company.
Company sponsorship
The following companies currently sponsor QUEST scholarships:
AECOM, Atkins, Balfour Beatty, BAM Nuttall, Buro Happold, Costain, Enterprise Mouchel, Farrans Construction, Galliford Try, Graham, Hyder Consulting, Interserve Construction, John Sisk & Son, Lagan Construction, Laing O’Rourke, Morgan Sindall, Mott MacDonald, Network Rail, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Peter Brett Associates, Ramboll, Skanska, Tony Gee & Partners, VINCI Construction, WSP Group.
Every year some but not all of these companies sponsor scholarships. Applicants who are invited to the QUEST interview day are told which of the companies are offering sponsorship that year.
Scholarship commitment
QUEST scholars are expected to work for a minimum of 8 weeks with their sponsor company each year during the summer holidays. Sponsor companies invest significant amounts of time, money and expertise in scholars, who are expected to join their sponsor company after graduation. Scholars who do not join their sponsor company may be required to return some of the sponsorship money.
In autumn each year QUEST scholars complete an annual report form covering the previous academic year. Scholars list their academic results (which must be verified and signed off by a university tutor) and reflect on their experiences, development and future plans.
Scholars are asked to make contact with their ICE regional support team and participate in a minimum of three activities that promote civil engineering and/or the scholarship. These activities offer scholars the opportunity to encourage awareness and enthusiasm for civil engineering amongst young people.
