An online photography exhibition celebrating the lives of people who use the tidal river for work, leisure or travel
In 2016 ICE celebrated an exhibition featuring images from photographer Matthew Joseph's River People and London's Super Highway collections, revealing how the Thames has become an integral part of life for residents in London.
From rowers and anglers using the river for leisure, to those who work on London's flood defences, sewage system and on riverboats, the Thames is a key part of London's character and an integral part of the city for many.
The River People exhibition is comprised of two distinct collections of photographs from artist Matthew Joseph.
The River People Collection is a portrait series which looks at the people of the river, those connected to it, those who work on it and those who make the most of it for its recreational benefits; highlighting the obvious and the less obvious.
Each photo includes an audio description of the story behind the image, providing insight from the artist and a history of each of the images.
The Super Highway Collection is as much an awareness campaign as it is a collection of Thames landscapes - attempting to reveal that the Thames is as important today as it's ever been. It's all about portraying the busyness of the bustling Thames and challenging the viewer by creating creative chaos across scenes they know so well.
The collection comprises a series of timelapse photos capturing the hustle and bustle of life on the River Thames.
The River People Exhibition was launched on 21 April 2016. Attendees included ICE Vice President Tim Broyd, Sir Peter Bazalgette, Chair of the Arts Council England and descendent of Sir Joseph Bazalgette, the engineer behind London's first sewerage system, and many of the subjects of the portraits on display.
